How to Cut the Neckline of a Hoodie

A hooded pullover sweatshirt is an easy but plain wardrobe staple. With a scissors' few snips, the hoodie can achieve a new style or be made even more comfortable by giving the wearer more neck room.

Step 1

Lay your hoodie on a flat surface. Cut a slit about a 1/2 inch below the center of the neckline. This will make additional cuts easier.

Step 2

Put on the sweatshirt and using a mirror (or a friend), see how low you want the front neckline of the hoodie to hang. Mark the desired neckline at the center with a straight pin. Repeat the process to determine how wide the neckline should be and mark with straight pins. Remove the sweatshirt.

Step 3

Lay the sweatshirt on a flat surface with the front side facing up. Draw the shape of the neckline between your pins and mark with the fabric chalk. Remove your straight pins. Cut the neckline along the chalk line with a pair of sharp scissors.

Tip

If you are unsure of how much fabric to cut, be conservative and start small. Remember, you can always go back and cut more.

Warning

Cut your hoodie only when it's laid flat on a work surface. Do not cut the hoodie while you are wearing it or you may hurt yourself.
