The colour of the stool helps to determine the cause of the problem. When your stool is chestnut or bright red, it usually means that you have problems with the lower digestive tract (gi), including the large intestine and rectum. Sometimes, if there is too much blood in the intestine for too long, there will be black stool with tar consistency. Red beets and tomatoes also cause colored feces.
