6. Prescription drug prices will continue to soar, with California voters defeating Proposition 61 in this election. The proposal, known as the California Drug Price Relief Act, aims to control the rise in prescription drug prices by prohibiting state agencies from paying higher minimum prices for prescription drugs than the US Department of Veterans Affairs.

Fortune explained that the overturn of the proposal was quite shocking considering that early polls seemed to pass the bill. However, the surprising subversion was attributed to pharmaceutical companies proving that if props passed, they might have to raise the price of drugs and let veterans make up for it.

Although the counter-measure, funded by the $110 million campaign of large pharmaceutical companies, has been passed, it does not mean that it will be the last time drug prices appear on the ballot.

Reuters reported that a large number of pharmaceutical companies have increased their prices substantially in recent years. In the past five years, the prices of four of the top ten commonly used drugs in the United States have risen by 100%.
