Apple cider vinegar. It is tasteless, odorless and – who are we kidding?! It tastes awful and smells just as bad. Yet, many are saying that if you drink it, you might as well be drinking out of a fountain of youth.

Satire aside, the fountain of youth claim may actually have some truth bones to it. If you drink this repulsive drink each day, you could very well have great things happen inside that aging, achy and perhaps even sickly body of yours.

For starters, what is apple cider vinegar?

Simply put, it’s a vinegar made from apples, sugar and yeast.

Now, a warning (!):

When we say, “drink apple cider vinegar,” we don’t really mean drink it straight from the bottle itself, or even pour it into a cup to drink as is. After all, it is a vinegar, and therefore extremely acidic. It will likely burn. Some have even described it as a sunburn in your throat. Your esophagus really wasn’t made to have such acid poured down it.

Drinking it really means to add some to a glass of water. We suggest 1-2 tablespoons per 1 cup of water.

Now, without further ado, here are some of the things that go through your body as you drink that golden, fermentation of a juice.

1. It eases stomach issues

In raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar, you will find apple pectin fiber. This has been found to soothe the gastrointestinal tract, guarding against bloating, gas and stomach cramps. If you struggle with constipation, ACV can serve as a mild laxative to ease the flow of your bowels.

Not to worry, however. If you have a regular digestive flow, it shouldn’t cause you to have issues.

2. Promote pH balance in the body

Do you want healthy hair and skin? Well, as it turns out, ACV has the ability to help the pH balance in your body, particularly your hair and skin. To have that positive effect, however, it needs to be applied topically. Simply dilute it with two parts water, and spread it over your face after washing at night, and in the morning before you apply your moisturizer. Dilute some in a spray bottle and spray in on your hair in the shower (pouring the bottle could cause you to overdo it since it’s a liquid.

And although you are not technically drinking it, your skin is an organ, and does absorb it at least into several layers of skin. We think it counts.

3. Prevent Candidiasis

Candidiasis, also known as Candida, is a yeast infection found in many individuals. In fact, it is found in most people in places like your mouth and belly, or on your skin, and normally don’t cause any problems. However, it can develop into a harmful infection if it grows out of control. And to prevent that from happening, apple cider vinegar has been listed among the best ways to do that.

4. Regulate Blood Sugar

Apple cider vinegar is full of acetic acid. And research has shown that acetic acid can slow down the digestion of simple carbohydrates. When this happens, your body is able to better regulate blood sugar levels. This is particularly good for individuals with diabetes.

In fact, One study conducted at Arizona State University found that taking 20 grams of apple cider vinegar added to 40 grams of water, with 1 teaspoon of saccharine, could lower blood sugar after meals. Another study found that taking apple cider vinegar before bed helped moderate blood sugar the following morning.

5. Rid your body of toxins (Detoxification)

Do you need to clear your system for a fresh reboot? Nothing like a highly acidic drink to burn it all out of you, right?

Drinking raw and unfiltered ACV is believed to help detoxify your liver – if of course you can get in past your esophagus first. However, just one tablespoon diluted in a large glass of water each day has been recommended as a good detoxifier – and less burny.

6. You may lose weight and reduce belly fat

Now before you think this is a magical weight melting toxin, think again. ACV has been found in several human studies to increase the feeling of being full if taken along with a meal high in carbohydrates. In fact, one study found that  Vinegar supplementation lowered glucose and insulin responses and increased the feeling of fullness after healthy subjects ate a bready/ high carb meal.

Regarding the loss in belly fat, a study in 175 people with obesity found that daily apple cider vinegar consumption led to reduced belly fat and weight loss.
