Kourtney Kardashian Did Keto (Of Kourse She Did)

Even if you aren't a fan of "Keeping Up with the Kardashians," you have probably noticed that Kourtney Kardashian looks freaking phenomenal — from her glowing skin to that fantastic figure. While the 38-year-old has revealed she is a major health nut and fitness junkie, she also gives major credit to the ketosis diet. In a new post on her app she goes into detail about her experience with the trendy, fat-burning method.

The ketosis diet (also called ketogenic and keto) encourages weight loss by forcing your body to burn fat — instead of carbs — for energy. Several variations of the diet have circulated over the years, but they all share the same methodology: Get the body into a state of ketosis. How is this achieved? By maintaining a diet "low in carbohydrates and high in protein and healthy fats," Kardashian, who first learned about the diet in 2017 from her physician, explains.

According to experts, the diet works fast, and some people may be able to lose more than 12 pounds in a month.

While on keto, Kardashian ate "minimal carbs and no grains, beans or legumes" with her meals, focusing on fresh vegetables and lean proteins. "I would make broccoli rice or cauliflower rice to at least feel like I was eating some carbs," she explained. "Then I would add protein, so I often ate grilled chicken and fish over broccoli rice, cauliflower rice or spaghetti squash. I mixed in roasted vegetables, fresh salads with homemade dressing and smoothies made with avocados and bananas."

Many people on the keto diet, including Kardashian, decide to go next level by pairing it with "intermittent fasting" in order to improve overall health benefits. She explains she would refrain from eating for 14 to 16 hours after dinner. "I wouldn't eat past 7 p.m. at night, and then I would wait to eat breakfast the next day until after my morning workout, which would be around 10:30 or 11. Then, one day a week, I did a 24-hour fast where I only drank homemade bone broth, water and green tea." To keep hunger at bay she incorporated collagen protein powder and apple cider vinegar. Pretty hardcore, right?

Kardashian checked in with her doctor while on the diet and also tested her blood sugar and ketone levels with at-home kits. She also granted herself one "treat yourself" day per week, which she so clearly deserved after exhibiting such superhuman willpower. As with most rapid weight-loss diets, keto can have some intense side effects, and Kardashian learned this the hard way. She experienced headaches and low energy for a "good week or two."

All in all, she had a "positive experience" on the diet. While currently taking a break from it (her regular diet is pretty hardcore as well; read about here), she plans on reintroducing it "later this year."
